Here is a quote when pondering the starting lineup for the opener.

Last winter, after the Fargo gaffe, Ron Gardenhire gave an interview to scout.com. Among other things he was asked about who he will start in the outfield. Here is his response:

Gardenhire: Well, they have to earn it. In the course of spring training next year, they will decide who is going to be out there playing. Either they get it done or they don’t. I don’t have to decide stuff like that, unless they all hit .500 in spring training and that makes it a little more difficult. But they have to decide who is going to go out there and play.

As a reminder:

This spring training:

Cuddyer .317/.358/.583, 2 HR, 5 BB. 9 RBI (60 AB)
Gomez .283/.358/.583, 3 HR, 6 BB, 5 SB, 8 RBI (60 AB)
Young .292/.313/.492, 3 HR, 1 SB, 9 RBI (65 AB)
Span .190/.274/.286, 1 HR, 9 BB, 2 SB, 10 RBI (84 AB)

Opening day lineup:

Span LF, Gomez CF, Cuddyer RF

This is not perjury, but Ron Gardenhire is a liar, any way you slice it.

Thrylos,

I had no problem with Span starting last night.

I had a huge problem with Cuddyer batting third with his 0 for 12 lifetime against Hernandez.

At least Gomez is learning to lay off the slider, unlike Cuddyer.

Blake,

I did not have a problem with Span starting either. I have a problem with Gardy lying publicly about what will determine his starting outfield.

Cuddyer was bad on the plate yesterday/ The Twins had several chances to break the game open but it did not happen.

Today is a different day :)

I'm excited to see Cuddyer hitting the ball again, but batting him third against a guy he has had NO success against suggests that Gardy's favoritism is a bigger factor than stats.
And I won't even get started on pulling Crain, Breslow pitching to one batter, etc. A lot of pitchers to use in a game that you are behind in.

I know... I was just expecting better from his this season. But old dogs and new tricks are kind of hard to mix...
